DAY 2 Bonanza Beach This morning, step right into a DIB launch to travel ashore for your first delightful island beach day. From the three-mile crescent of sand on Isla Espiritu Santo, you’ll enjoy beach combing, swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking. Anytime, you are free to return to the Spirit of Endeavour anchored just a few hundred yards offshore. This afternoon, the Captain goes “gunkholing” along the island shorelines, seeking marine wildlife. Gunkholing is a yachting term for looking into the next cove just to see what’s there – You will do a lot of this.
DAY 3 Seeking whales and marine life Whales abound along both the Pacific and Sea of Cortés waters of Baja and today is your best chance to see them. Generally, from mid-January to mid-March migratory gray whales concentrate in the Pacific lagoons centered around Bahía Magdalena. When our local experts advise us that the grays are present, you’ll cross the Baja Peninsula to the Pacific shore. At Puerto Adolfo Lopez Mateos you board outboard-equipped panga boats and head out to seek close encounters.
When the grays are not reliably present on the Pacific coast, you will enjoy the freedom of a full day seeking blue whales, humpbacks, whale sharks and more in the sparkling Sea of Cortés. The Captain is in radio contact with the few other ships scattered far across this sea. Today’s schedule is flexible, so when he hears about whale sightings, off you go! An especially thrilling sight – encountered quite often in the Sea of Cortés – is schools of hundreds of Pacific bottlenose dolphins, silvery in the sunshine as they break the water.
DAY 4 Isla San Jose, Isla San Francisco Guided by weather and tides, you may go to one island or both. Each features beach activities and hikes led by your Exploration Leader. On Isla San Jose, a gravel bar protects a placid, shallow mangrove-backed lagoon that is perfect for exploration by kayak. Isla San Francisco features a lovely beach with good snorkeling and kayaking into intimate coves.
DAY 5 Loreto For over a century, Loreto was the colonial capital of all the Californias, until an 1829 hurricane caused the capital to be moved to La Paz. Today, Loreto is a sleepy seaside community, whose highlight is the Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto, founded in 1697. The museum adjacent to the mission displays historical artifacts and paintings from Baja’s colonial era. Perhaps sample local ice cream or a seafood taco at the friendly local shops and restaurants. Before departing this afternoon, enjoy a reception with entertainment at the mission.
DAY 6 Isla Partida Cruise by Los Islotes, a steep seamount which is home to a colony of blue-footed boobies and, at the waterline, a large colony of California sea lions. You may have a chance to swim and snorkel here, with the female sea lions playing all around you (they’re about as big as you are). Later, the Spirit of Endeavour anchors at Ensenada Grande on nearby Isla Partida for more delightful beach activities. In this sheltered, vee-shaped Cove, the silky sandy bottom shelves out very gradually for many yards, as gentle waves lap onto the beach. Back on board this evening, enjoy the Captain’s, Farewell Dinner.
DAY 7 La Paz This morning, you are exploring waters that centuries ago were the site of fierce battles between the Spaniards and English pirates. Later, the Spirit of Endeavour returns to La Paz. You’ll have time for shopping and optional tours. DAY 8 Transfer Disembark the Spirit of Endeavour at La Paz and transfer to the airport at La Paz or Los Cabos for your flight home or for your trip to the Copper Canyon – see the next page. Plan your Cabo flight for 1:00 pm or later.
